Canada’s AI Strategy and Missed Commercial Opportunities - Part 1

Pioneering Beginnings vs. Foreign Encroachment: Canada was among the first nations to launch a national AI strategy (the Pan-Canadian Artificial Intelligence Strategy under the Trudeau government around 2016-2017), funding research hubs in Edmonton (Amii), Toronto (Vector Institute), and Montreal (Mila, led by Yoshua Bengio). However, we highlight and argue that instead of nurturing sovereign commercial scale, Canada invited foreign "hyperscalers" (Google, Microsoft, Amazon) as primary partners.
