The Toronto Waterfront Project (Sidewalk Labs): The Canadian government initially awarded the Quayside smart-city project to Alphabet/Google’s Sidewalk Labs. Canada-side experts opposed this because Google would have retained ownership of the intellectual property, data, and technology testbeds while benefiting from tax incentives. Said experts noted that out of Sidewalk Labs' extensive partner bid list, only Brookfield Asset Management was Canadian (included primarily for real estate capital). The project collapsed following public backlash and leadership changes at Waterfront Toronto.
