Canada’s AI Strategy and Missed Commercial Opportunities - Part 3
Early IP Sell-Offs (The Hinton / DNNresearch Precedent)

Early IP Sell-Offs (The Hinton / DNNresearch Precedent): In 2012, University of Toronto professor Geoffrey Hinton and his graduate students (Alex Krizhevsky and Ilya Sutskever) auctioned their neural-network company, DNNresearch, to Google for $44M. We view this as a major missed opportunity: instead of becoming an independent, anchor contract-research firm for Canada (akin to ARM in the UK or Qualcomm in the US), its breakthroughs and top talent (such as Sutskever, who later co-founded OpenAI) were exported to Silicon Valley.
